Going around May . . suggestions on hotels/villas, etc?Who has a great itinerary/suggestions for Italy's Amalfi coast?
First, I would suggest staying in Sorrento. There are some great hotels with beach access. And from there you can easily get up to Naples and Pompeii or down to the main Amalfi coast. Will you have a car. If you ahve time and like to drive, I would suggest it.
The circumvesuviano train will get you from Sorrento to Pompeii and Naples easily.
Always be very aware of pickpockets at the train station. They are there whether you see them or not and they act fast.
From Sorrento you can (and should) go to Capri. There are regular ferries. (I put a link in the Sources below.)
Though on the Bay of Naples on technically not the Amalfi coast, you should also visit Pompeii and if you can, Herculaneum. The latter is the 'sister' city of Pompeii. There are far less crowds, though there are also less uncovered ruins. But as you enter the gate, there is a tremendous view of the bay of Naples, and you can completely imagine the view from Roman times. (Then also visit the Archaelogical museum in Naples.)
There are many other smaller places to visit on the coast. You are going in May but do not say for how long. However, you will certainly want to do some swimming.
The National Geographic site listed below has a lot of information and links to follow too.
