What is better for December in Italy, Umbria or Amalfi?

People have told me that Umbria can be cold and rainy, others claim it barely rains in December. Some tell me most atractions are closed in the Amalfi coast in December, others tell me they open for the season... help!!What is better for December in Italy, Umbria or Amalfi?
What are you looking for exactly in December? Personally, I would choose Rome, Florence, or the Christmas markets of the north as December destinations. Or if you're looking for warmer weather, consider Sicily. the average daily high in December in Palermo is around 16 deg C (61 deg F).

There are several hotels and restaurants on the Amalfi Coast that are seasonal and close for the winter. The boats will also be running on a winter schedule with fewer trips than during the peak tourist seasons. That doesn't mean that you can't have a good time in the area though. The average daily high in December is 13 deg C (56 deg F) while the average low is 5 deg C (41 deg F). October to December are the rainy season, but the weather isn't constantly bad. You will be able to do things like visiting Pompeii, get to Capri, visit the villas along the coast. It isn't really the time to go to the beach though.

December in Umbria can depend on exactly where you are. Perugia is on average a little colder than the amalfi Coast ranging from an average low of 2 deg C (36 deg F) to a high of 9 deg C (48 deg F). You can get precipitation in December in Perugia, but it's on average 40 - 60 percent less than along the Amalfi Coast.

I lived in Italy for a few years when I was younger.

To tell you the truth, all of Italy is kinda rainy in the winter. It doesn't snow in the south at all though. If you're spending money to take a nice vacation in Italy, I would recommend to hold it off until next summer and you will have a much better time. The summer is beautiful and the night life is so lively! If you go in the winter, it's always kinda dreary.

Umbria and the Amalfi Coast are very different places and it's really up to what you personally like. Umbria and Amalfi both have fun towns to go out on at night and there are fun things to do in both of them. The main difference I would say, is at the Amalfi Coast has the beautiful sea and Umbria doesn't. Umbria is made up of rolling hills and it's more of a country feeling. There are a lot of farms and trees. Even if you go to the Amalfi Coast, it will be too cold to swim.

I personally like the Amalfi Coast, but it's all up to what you want to see. What is better for December in Italy, Umbria or Amalfi?
There can be cold. I would suggest you to visit Siracusy in Sicilia. There are also some great travel tips in Sicily. I think that's the best option you can have in December if you like warm weather, like me. :)
