I have a 7 day trip to italy coming in May. I fly into Rome. Where should I go?

We would like to see as much as possible. Rome, Venice, Amalfi coast. But is that possible? First time trip. I'm looking for tips on travel, transportation, hotels, what part of Rome to stay in. I'm looking for tips from people who have been there a lot.I have a 7 day trip to italy coming in May. I fly into Rome. Where should I go?
Personally, I would recommend that you don't try to do too much in a 7 day period. You'll see a lot more if you spend a bit less time in transit and use the time for sightseeing. Are you flying out of Rome also? If so, you're constrained by having to return to Rome for your flight out. There's a lot to see and do in Rome itself, but you can hit most of the highlights in a three day stay.

From Rome, you can easily get to Pompeii or Sorrento or Capri for a day trip as a day trip using the trains from Rome to Naples. For Sorrento or Pompeii, you would transfer to the Circumvesuviana train in Naples. Both Pompeii and Sorrento are on the same train line. You could also do either using an escorted day trip from Rome. For Capri, take a cab to Molo Beverello from the train station in Naples and then a boat to the island.

The rest of the Amalfi Coast takes longer. There is no train service, travel is by boat or bus unless you have a car.

The best option for getting to Venice from Rome is the night train. You can sleep through the night in a berth and have the full day for sightseeing. It also has the benefit of not requiring a hotel for the night. A day or two in Venice should be enough to cover the city. This year, the Biennale will be running and there's a lot to see associated with that. The main areas are in the Giardino and Arsenale, but there will be exhibitions all over the city.

Florence would be another great choice from Rome. It's a fairly short ride on the fast trains and there's a lot to see %26amp; do with many possible day trips (Pisa/Lucca, San Gimignano, Siena, Arezzo, ...) if you choose to stay there.

You can save money on the faster trains trains by buying tickets in advance. Look for the Amica fare; it's up to 20% off the standard fare, but you have to buy the ticket at least by the day before your trip.

You could visit all three cities...from Rome to Venice (8 hours by car) from Rome to Amalfi (5 hours by car)I have a 7 day trip to italy coming in May. I fly into Rome. Where should I go?
7 days are few to see many things. And Venice is far from Rome.

You should visit just Rome, 7 days are hardly enough.

The best to see in Rome is: Colosseo and Foro Romano, Vatican City, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Fontana di Trevi, Via del Corso and its shops... and much more.
Visit the Vatican City!
to italy!
