I will be traveling to Italy and my home base (taking side trips) will be in Naples.?

I am wondering if there is another train rail that runs in Italy besides the eurostar? Something cheap that you can ride on everday and every morning to take side trips. Also, is it easier to travel from Naples to Rome, Naples to the Amalfi Coast, Naples to Calabria, Naples to Lake Como; by train or car? Can you take a ferry from Naples to Palermo, Sicily? How long is the ferry (How many hours, minutes)?I will be traveling to Italy and my home base (taking side trips) will be in Naples.?
The Eurostar is a type of train, not the train company here. It's one of the faster trains with limited stops and therefore more expensive. Depending on where you're going, there may be intercity trains with a few more stops or regional trains with a lot of stops. The regional trains are generally the cheapest option, but take longer and may require multiple train changes if you're going long distances. You can check specific schedules and prices at the Italian train website: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/cms/v/i鈥?/a>

I wouldn't recommend driving in either Naples or Rome.

From Naples to the Amalfi Coast, you can go by boat, bus, or train. The train is the Circumvesuviana line which goes to Sorrento (and there's a stop at Pompeii on the way). To go beyond Sorrento, you need to take a bus or boat if you're not driving. There are ferry schedules and prices here for Capri and the Amalfi Coast: http://www.capri.net/en/ship-timetable

Ferries to Palermo take about 10.5 hours. There's information here: http://www.viamare.com/SNAV-naples-paler鈥?/a>I will be traveling to Italy and my home base (taking side trips) will be in Naples.?
Oh yes, absolutely, the Eurostar is mostly if you need to travel hundreds miles.

Take a local train like a espresso (yeah like coffee) or a local so called trail, for all your one day trips. Also from naples to Rome or lake of Como I'd choose train. believ me you don't want to drive there.

If you want to check distances and cool places on the Amalfi cost take a look here
