I want to go to Italy this june-july, and can only fly into rome so was thinking of hiring a car and driving down to sorrento area, is this a worth while drive? because i was thinking of getting a train down to naples instead then nip over to capri for a night or two and then on return to inland i could then pick up a car and drive down to the amalfi coast which im sure would be a beautiful sight!
Anyway as ive never been before what do you think? any itinerary that maybe you did and would recommend? Thanks!Any holidayers here been to italy? such as rome, naples, sorrento, amafi coast etc..?
I would recommend the trains - easy to use and extremely prompt.
Car hire is not for the faint hearted - I once hired a car from Naples airport as we were staying in Sorrento and the only time we used it was to drive to the hotel and then along the amalfi coast. It was at the point that an italian on a moped - with no helmet and no shoes who was talking on his mobile phone - cut me up on the side of a huge cliff that I decided to park it up and walk!
Please, don't drive in Rome or Naples. Not only are the roads congested and drivers quite agressive, but once you get into these cities there's nowhere to park!! Trains run regularly between these cities, and once you get to Sorrento from Naples, busses can run you to Positano and Amalfi from Sorrento. This is far more economical than renting a car, and less stressful and time consuming. Car rentals are ideal for Umbria and Tuscany, not for the larger cities, trust me. Good luck and have a GREAT time on your trip to Italy.Any holidayers here been to italy? such as rome, naples, sorrento, amafi coast etc..?
June/July in Italy is very hot so be ready for this as for driving if you have never driven in Italy then you are in for a big surprise All Italian drivers of either sex want to be first so when someone flashed you it means move out of the way. Also you can turn on a red light if you are turning right remember what side of the road you are on! Rome and Naples can be a nightmare. so I would get the train to naples then go to capri come back and then drive back up.
The autostrada [M-ways] are good but expensive so A roads are better get a good map as the road signs coming of the Motorways can be very confusing something like 50 signs on one pole and you have two seconds to make up your mind parking is easy in the towns and some cities you have 60 mins parking time. If you have time Venice is mind blowing if you can try the train into venice wonderful.
