What is the best town to stay in (hotel too?) in the Amalfi Coast area of southern Italy? I have heard Amalfi is a little touristy...Is there a kind of undiscovered gem in this area? What is the best place to stay near the Amalfi Coast?
I just visited the Amalfi Coast a month ago and although it's very beautiful you are right, you can find a better place to stay than the town Amalfi as it's only good for a day trip. I thought Sorrento was a much better town as it is just as beautiful yet bigger so all in all you have many more options to pass your time.
They had started decorating the streets for xmas when I was there and looked great so I can just imagine how it would look in the lead up to xmas.
For best hotels in Sorrento see:

Otherwise if you're not into the bigger town, a little undiscovered gem is up the mountain behind the coast in a town called Ravello. It's very small although very quaint so you should enjoy the tranquility if that's your thing.
Hope this helps :)
