Fly into Naples, unless you have time to tour around Rome. Don't miss Sorrento! Drink some limoncello and sit on a bench and watch people!
Naples airport is the closest airport (see Italy airports map for information http://www.theairdb.com/country/ITA.html). There are 3 airport buses a day to Sorrento and from Sorrento there are bus connections to Amalfi.
If you get to Rome (I assume Fiumicino), well, it is not difficult either.
First you need to get a train from Roma Termini, Rome's main train station, to Napoli Centrale, Naples' main train station. More info on this part of the journey on Trenitalia (http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD)
Then you'll take the private Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento on the Amalfi Peninsula http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en.Fly into Naples or Rome for vacation in Amalfi Coast?
You can fly to Rome and then fly from there to Naples. My sister and I preferred doing that than going on the train from Rome to Naples because it was less of a hassle and we did not have to worry about lugging our baggage up and down stairs.
If you can take a direct flight to Naples then I would suggest that. The Amalfi coast is breathtaking. You will love it. If you have the time, try to visit Capri, Anacapri, Positano, Ischia and Sorrento. Have a wonderful and safe trip.
Either will work.......Flying into Naples and taking in the Amalfi coast is a swell idea..........ya gotta see Capri while you're there......
but then does that mean you're NOT going to see ROME as well????
Can you do BOTH?????? Fly into Rome......give it at least a day or two........and THEN, head down to Naples..........not far by train....
shame to come all this way and NOT see Rome too, if ya have the chance. !
i would take a train from rome to naples because italian trains= so much fun! you meet all kinds of people and plus its cheaper.
even if i had to pay more for the train iwould take it because its soo much fun =)
