First of all, is it safe to leave the two of them on the beach and at the hotel (Grand Wailea) while my husband and myself go sightseeing for the day? is this a bad idea? or reasonable? please help we are stuck on what to do because i DOUBT i can get two 15 yearolds to go sightseeing when the beach is just outside the hotelroom!! any advice is greatly appreciated. ALOHALeaving two teens on beach in Hawaii.....?
It depends, are you comfortable leaving your daughter alone and the same goes for her friend's parents.

It also depends on the girls, if they're mature and responsible and can keep out of trouble and not cause a disturbance, then yes, I'm sure that's okay.
I would say they could handle being by themselves

As long as they are mature and responsible and you have trust in them..

just make sure they stay together and give them a celll phone and contact them when it is necissary to check up'as long as there are lifegaurds present it should not be to much of a problem

Also have them watch one another this will also provide safety!Leaving two teens on beach in Hawaii.....?
The beach right outside of the Grand Wailea is very safe. No problem.

99% of the days, the water at Wailea is a bath tub--virtually still. Check with the desk--there's always exceptions.
Would you feel comfortable leaving them alone in any other large city? Do you want them in the ocean, unsupervised? Do you trust them to stay in the area that you specify? What do the friend's parents think? I have kids close to that age, and I wouldn't want them in the ocean without an adult near by, but the pool would be o.k. We were in Hawaii last year, and my kids were allowed to roam around the resort, but we didn't leave them there, or let them swim in the ocean without us. Have fun!
A tourist spot like that wouldn't be able to afford NOT to be safe. 15 years old is responsible enough to handle a day on their own. Just make sure they stay together, and hopefully at least one of them has a cell phone. Call and check in a couple times. They'll be fine. If you were going to let them go exploring Vegas, at night, by themselves, then it would be a different story. Have fun on your trip!
Hawaii has one of the lowest crime rates in the US.

To be on the safe side, just inform the lifeguard on duty to keep an eye on them and as the other person said cell phone is a great tool too.
the undertoes and waves? should i worry?

Yes, the ocean is a deadly place....many tourtists have lost their lives, because of lack of knowledge of the ocean......

In Hawaii, we have saying, "Never turn your back on the ocean", the waves can come up and take you out to sea...

We have very strong undercurrents, and ripples.

Always wear water shoes in the ocean as well, we have tonz of coral, and creatures that live under the sand.

Also, please make sure there is no full moon when you visit...or you will be stung as a given by tonz of jellyfish. they come out after a full moon and stay for up to 10 days after!

If you do happen to get stung, have a bottle of water and vinegar ready to spray on sting, if not then bury the stung part under the sand to relieve the pain.
Grand Wailea is a upper class hotel and is private. Leaving your daughter and her friend there isnt a problem. I'd lay some ground rules though. No one is aloud in the Hotel room, call and check in if they are changing scenes, etc.

Im from Oahu, and had the opportunity to stay at the Grand Wailea, once. It's soo beautiful, one of the best in the state. I went when i was about that age, my family and maybe 10 good friends. We were left alone, but then again, frequently make trips to the beach on Oahu. Nothing out of the ordinary.

I think we were responsible and respectful of our parents wishes. we always called to check in! Keep that into concideration!
I think you've gotten some good advice. The only thing I can add, since your main concern is water safety, is to see if there are life guards stationed at the beach where your daughter will be staying. If so, they should stay in the area where the life guards will be able to observe them. They won't be babysitting them, but they will notice if they get into trouble in the water. That hotel has a fabulous pool, so if the beach seems too risky, they should be able to have a good time on the hotel grounds.

Ko Olina is on Oahu, on the west coast, not Kaneohe, but it is not on Maui, so it isn't going to be an option for you.
you have gotten alot of replies, so i thought i would add something a little different. if you check out the beach and don't feel too comfortable about leaving them there by themselves, then maybe think about bringing them to the Ko'Olina Lagoons. It's in Kaneohe, so if you're going to go around the area, bring them there. it is a type of resort there but also free lagoons to go to, there are four small beautiful beach type lagoons, the water isn't very deep, no big waves, and towards the back of the lagoon is a net to keep big fish away. alot of people go their especially on the weekends but never any trouble, alot people their age also. on one of the lagoons there is a shower station, there are restrooms on them, on i think the last one, there is a mini mart (unless they have closed it now). they could even walk from lagoon to lagoon if they wanted. it's very safe, relaxing and fun. i grew up on oahu and i enjoyed ko'Olina everytime i went. here is a link, if you scroll towards the bottom where it says Ko'Olina you can read about it and it has several pictures of the lagoons!

despite what this website says about the lagoons, they really are a great place away from the dangers of the ocean at the beach, and really nice too! the most popular lagoon i think is the first one.

you can also google it if you want more information. If you don't have a rental car, alot of the hotels have buses that will bring you to many places, including Ko'Olina. If you do happen to bring them there, after you and your husband are done sight seeing, come back, pick the girls up, and go to the Paradise Cove Luau, it's on the resort so you wouldn't have to drive far, you could probably even walk. but it is one of the best luau's on Oahu! good luck! have fun!!
As long as they're able to use common sense, they'll be fine - don't talk to strangers (even cute ones), pay attention to signs, stuff like that. Never leave valuables where they can be seen! Just because you're in "paradise" doesn't mean that there isn't crime.

As to water hazards, just check with the lifeguards. If water conditions are not safe, they post signs to let folks know. Should they get caught in a current, let them know to swim at a 90 degree angle to it, or just let it pull them out a bit. Holler and wave arms to get a lifeguard's attention.

I'm glad you're giving thought to their water safety. Too many tourists forget that the ocean is real and can be trouble if they're not aware. Check with the lifeguard on duty if you're concerned. Enjoy your stay!

it takes good care of all there guest.
