Suggest 3rd destination on first trip to Italy?

Already planned for 3 nights in Rome and 6 nights outside of Florence with daytrips throughout Tuscany.

Should we add 3 nights in:

Amalfi coast

--or--

Lake Como

--or--

Other.....

First time to Italy. Taking parents for 60th bday. Aside from Rome, little interest in bustling cities and overcrowded areas. Want to see "true" italy. Not very interested in Venice (as described in Frommers 2008 guide).Suggest 3rd destination on first trip to Italy?
I'm italian...and I travelled a lot throught my nation.

(don't forget to visit Lucca, during your trip throughtout Tuscany: it's simply majestic and I think it's the typical example of italian living in a small town)

I can suggest to you whole the sicily. if you got 3 nights, you can move around palermo in the west part of the sicily. (also if it depends by the season: it's incredibly hot during the summer). you can visit palermo city, cefal霉, corleone, and go to the island of favignana.

if you don't wanto to go there, I suggest the same part of italy: the south! Matera in the Basilicata and the sea in the Puglia (the region are neighbor).

enjoy italy, cause this summer I will enjoy australia!!!
This is the first time I have heard a tourist saying "I'm not interested in Venice"..:)

Anyway, if I were you I'd chose Como lake. I'm in love with it, it's simply fantastic. You can rent a car and take a drive all around the lake. Garda lake could be another option and you could add a day trip to Verona to visit the famous balcony of Romeo and Juliet. Are you coming in the summer? 'Cause there is kind of festival at the arena in Verona if you like opera. It's impressive, I've been there a couple of times. Nice cties to visit, not far from Verona, are Mantova and Padova. Middle size cities, not overcrowed with tourists. What else...Perugia and Assisi! Located in the north of Rome, just on the road to Tuscany they're definitely worth a visit!

Hope this help

Bye!Suggest 3rd destination on first trip to Italy?
I would recommend Cinque Terra (over the Amalfi Coast) - five small villages on the north west coast of Italy, near the Italian Riviera. You can hike or take a minute train from village to village....it is absolutely beautiful and very quaint - a nice getaway after visiting Rome. Here are a couple of links for more information:

Of course Florence is also very beautiful, but will be busy if you are going in the summer.

Have a great trip! :)
Since you're already covering Tuscany, the Amalfi coast is a good choice as suggested by others - you could visit Pompeii and Capri from there. You might also consider Cinque Terre which is incredible and accessible by train. Or Perugia isn't so crowded if you're not there during the Umbria Jazz Fest or the Eurochocolate Festival and is close to Assisi
if you like the art and the history of Itlay, you can visit a beautyful cities like Bologna, Parma, Milano... in the noth of the contry... but if you like seasides you can vist a city that I like a lot: Gallipolli (Lecce, Puglia, in the suth of Italy), there is a wonderful sea and here you can find monuments and older church too.

I go here every summuer...I live in Italy

i hope i'll help you
If I may suggest a nice trip, I'll tell you to stay 6 nights in Florence/Tuscany and 6 nights Rome/Lazio. There is more to see in Rome than Florence and 3 days aren't enough.

Last resort if you want a 3rd destination and amazing beach time Sardegna island where all the VIP spend their vacations.

I grew up 25yrs in Rome so I know some about it. Buon viaggio.
I suggest you Veneto, but you must spend all 3 days for visiting Venice, or you could visit the other medieval towns in this area like Verona, Vicenza, Padova, Montagnana, Este or if you are interestin about nature i suggest you a trip round the Dolomiti Mountains.

Have a nice trip
try the Cinqueterre ! it is worth a trip, but you can also visit Genoa, a town with a lot of history. Much to see and it's not (yet) on every tourist "must" list. Still it does hide a lot of interesting things to see and discover. Below links show you around and give you further idea's on what to see.
i would say lake como because it is gorgeous! you can take a day trip to milano if you want also. you're the first person i have heard to say that they don't want to go to venezia... it is very nice there, even if you just went for a day - you could visit neighboring towns also. have fun.
Have to ask when you are coming...I'm in the north and its been raining since the 11th of May and its wet, wet and wet. There is no end in sight..............................

If you want wine, food tours..goto piemont region..

if you want beach, hot weather goto the south calabria, sicilia, etc Como is relaxing..not too many tourists but like I said its been raining for three weeks now.....when are you planning the holidays?? Bad weather can ruin a holiday........
Amalfi coast! My dream place.

http://travelerfolio.com/places/europe/i鈥?/a>
you should visit Caserta...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caserta

yeap...i was sure that some of you will do that...Caserta has a replica castle of Versailles...so...you'd better think twice...
I would go to THE AMALFI COAST. It looks beautiful from the pictures.
Amalfi Coast is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!! GO there and its not expensive!
I suggest you to visit Como or Cinque terre...breathtaking views!!

HELP! any tips on finding friendly tialians my age?

Hey! im 17 and going to Italy this summer, mostly on the Amalfi Coast and i was looking for/ wondering about how to make friends with people my age.... im really friendly and can speak a little Italian and was really wondering if anyone (italian natives or american travelers) could help me out! Thanks so much! =)HELP! any tips on finding friendly tialians my age?
There won't be a problem just go to the beach, nice Bar maybe a sports club and in no time you'll meet new people. Italians love to speak to unfamiliar faces...
You shouldn't have any problems finding Italians or Americans. But I'm not sure about Tialians!! They are very sneaky I would stay away from them........HELP! any tips on finding friendly tialians my age?
Hotel Farini is a superior 2 Star Hotel situated in the old town centre, next to Termini, main railway station that is well connected to the airport, subway, buses and taxis. You can easily get to all ancient historic points of the city, most of them reachable on foot or by any other means of transportation. We can organise guided tours of the city and of its surrounding.

I am taking a cruise which stops for 1 day in Naples/Capri in May. Help with excursion planning!!?

I have several choices for guided tours. Which area around Naples do I want to see (well, more than any other)? I have a choice of driving the Amalfi coast, seeing Sorrento, Naples, cruising to the island of Capri, hiking Mt. Vesuvius or exploring Pompeii. Any veterans out there? I'm 30 and prefer hiking/walking to driving on a tour bus all day.I am taking a cruise which stops for 1 day in Naples/Capri in May. Help with excursion planning!!?
I've been to all those places and you must not skip Capri. Go to see the blue grotto -- it's unforgettable.
i just was on the carnival liberty in October and i did there tour that went to Pompeii, sorrento and Capri and i highly recommend it. i am also 30 and went with a group of friends and we just loved that tour. it's a full day you first get on a bus next to the ship and go to Pompeii then you go to sorrento for lunch and after that take a boat to Capri and go to the top. then you get back on the boat to take you directly to the cruise. it was a well rounded experienceI am taking a cruise which stops for 1 day in Naples/Capri in May. Help with excursion planning!!?
I would personally take the hike to the Vesuvius or exploring Pompeii. I did Pompeii and we didn't have time enough to explore everything even though we spend several hours there. We had a "quick" run through the ruins before we had to head back to our ship.

Amalfi/ Sorrento/ Capri are very nice towns but if you have seen one of them, you have seen them all three. They are similar but of course so different if you understand what I am trying to say.

  • I am going to Italy soon & staying with family. I was wondering if there are any 2-3 day tours around Naples?

or around Rome, Capri, Amalfi Coast? any suggestions?????I am going to Italy soon %26amp; staying with family. I was wondering if there are any 2-3 day tours around Naples?
There are lots of possibilities for things you can see on your own in the area. Certainly from Naples one of the highlights is Pompeii and Herculaneum. These are easily and cheaply accessible by taking the Circumvesuviana train from Naples toward Sorrento. The Pompei - Scavi and Erculano - Scavi stops are a short walk from the ruins. There's a trip planner here: http://www.vesuviana.it/web/it/homepage You can also easily take the same train to the end of the line to Sorrento. From there, you could go on to see some of the other towns along the Amalfi Coast by bus or boat.

Capri is easy to get to and very worth a day. Go to the port of Molo Beverello in Naples and take the boat. Capri info %26amp; ferry schedules: http://www.capri.net/en/ship-timetable

You can also go up Mt Vesuvius.

There are tours for things like this if that's what you want: http://www.viator.com/tours/Naples/Mt-Ve鈥?/a> , http://www.capritime.com/en/vesuvius-tou鈥?/a> , http://www.too-to-train.com/BA0EA71C30F0鈥?/a>

Of course, there are all the things to see in Naples as well.I am going to Italy soon %26amp; staying with family. I was wondering if there are any 2-3 day tours around Naples?
If you want to spend 2-3 days in another area I would recommend Sorrento or the smaller towns of Positano or Ravello on the peninsula. This area is very beautiful and will give you a nice contrast to the bustiling city of Napoli. We stayed in Sant'Angello which is less touristy and cheaper than Sorrento, but an easy 10 minute walk to everything Sorrento has to offer and easy bus rides to Ravello and Positano on the other side of the peninsula. Have fun!

    Jealous!!

Want to go to Italy end of june only have 7 nights and was thinking of spending some time on capri...?

sorrento and the amalfi coast. Do u think we'll feel rushed and will miss out? I know its better than not going at all but would hate to feel that theres so much more to see.

Also we can only fly into Rome so renting a car and going to be brave and drive down to sorrento, has anyone had this type of driving experience? Is it crazy?Want to go to Italy end of june only have 7 nights and was thinking of spending some time on capri...?
The drive down as far as Sorrento isn't too bad if you stay out of Naples. Driving on the Amalfi Coast highway past Sorrento can be interesting though. You really don't need a car to make this trip. From Rome, you can catch the train to Naples and change to the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento from there. The Circumvesuviana train also has stops at the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Then catch the boat to Capri. There are buses from Sorrento that will take you further down the Amalfi Coast, but it is the one part of the trip where a car can be useful if you can handle the traffic.

There will always be more that you could see and do no matter how long you're here. I've been living in Italy for 10 years and haven't come close to seeing everything I'd like to even though I go out exploring most weekends. Before I moved here, I used to take short breaks of 3 or 4 days to Europe and target specific cities. Leaving something for the next trip isn't so bad. Rather you feel rushed or not depends on how much you try to cram into the time you have. Take the time to enjoy where you are - relax a bit. You can see and do a lot in 7 days. Sometimes when I have visitors, we have gone to Pompeii or Capri for a day or two trip from where I live south of Verona using the night trains for travel. It's a long way to go and we certainly don't see everything there is, but it's always a good time.
To drive from Rome to Sorrento is possible, so you can move in convenience and you can see all the beauties of the Coastal Amalfitana: the beaches, the art, asked you the Marina Grande.

Attention to the traffic: above all in summer in those places there are as people, as traffic, as crazy persons that drive badly....

Sorrento is a particularly beautiful seaside even if more than great beaches retain small sandy really picturesque and romantic.

Don't miss Amalfi Coast:It 'one of the coastal and most celebrated in Italy, Positano, with its charming fishing village who marries Mediterranean architectural harmony and beauty of the environment.

Best Regards and have a nice TRIP!!!Want to go to Italy end of june only have 7 nights and was thinking of spending some time on capri...?
Capri is a fantastic island to visit. However, you might get a little bored after a day or so on the island. Just my opinion of course.

Sorrento is a nice place but as others have said its packed full of English tourists, its a bit like Brighton in someways.

However, there is much more to the Amalfi Coast than Sorrento.

Have a look at the well laid out Amalfi section on the Vivid Italy website http://www.vividitaly.co.uk/destination/鈥?/a> - its give you some simple and useful info about the area. If you want to get away from the UK tourists I would suggest you visit Attrani, Massa Lubrense and Positano.

Driving from Rome to Sorrento really does vary on what type of driver you. If you are experienced of driving in Europe you should be ok. However, if you are nervous I would suggest you either take the train or an internal flight.
That part of Italy is extremely wonderful but of course it's full of tourists, above all English tourists. Fly to Rome and drive to Sorrento is not so crazy, it's only ~ 250 Kms, about 3 hours driving (keep in mind that this zone is dramatically full of traffic) but when You will be there everything can be forgotten, the sea is wonderful, the panorama is fantastic and people so kind...You will always remember of this vacation...reserve the hotel in this moment to avoid the problem that every hotel is full
it is very normal... it is not crazy

but A1 carway is very epansive and gasoline in italy is very epansive.

    You can take train .

You can take train from rome to naples then tahke another little tarain (called circumvesuviana ) to sorrento.

Regional train tiket roma-napoli cost about 10鈧?(about 3 hour faster train is more expansive)

    http://trenitalia.it/

tiket from "napli piazza garibaldi" to sorrento cost about 5鈧?

    http://www.vesuviana.it/web/
Sorrento is full of tourists, Not been to amalfi but its meant to be very nice, Capri is amazing my auntie lives there, you have to go and see the blue grotto, its very expensive to go in (was free for us but hey) its absolutely amazing, not really that much to do on the island mind full of designer shops and nice little bars.

Have been to rome, lots to see there but could do all the sites in bout 2 days if you felt up to it. :)
For American people is very difficult drive in Italy.

We are crazy when we are in our car.
You will need a second morgage sooooooo expensive
I wouldn't rent a car. Sorrento is very busy with traffic and you won't need it much. Its an extra cost and like i say you won't need it much. I would rather spend the cash on having a few boat trip and days out. Most hotels in Sorrento and along the Amalfi coast have small buses which run you into town and pick you up. They will even pick you up from the railway station. I would get the train from Rome to Naples then the Circumvesuviana, this way you can enjoy the views a lot more rather than worrying about traffic. Naples is very hectic and it can be stressful is you're not used to it. The roads are very narrow along the coast and can be quite scary, sometimes there are queues. (soon there will be even more traffic as the schools are breaking up and the holidays will be starting!)

Use say, Sorrento as your base and take day trips out to Capri and Amalfi or even to Pompei. I would say a day in Capri is plenty, especially if you get an early boat. A week will be plenty and you could have one day of sightseeing and one day of rest and you will really enjoy it.

A tip whenever you sit in Cafes etc even for a beer or juice they will charge you double or even triple the amount. Especially in Capri,it can be very expensive. Its fine to sit down once or twice in the day (especially if its hot or you need to rest) but if not buy water etc from the stall venders. Make sure you go up to Anacapri and take the chairlift o the top of Monte Solaro as the views are breathtaking and its such fun going up on the chairlift!

There are boat trips from Sorrento which go to Positano and along the Amalfi coast as well as buses. Always have your swimming stuff and a towel with you, as when its hot and you see the beautiful beaches you may want to have a dip!

Can I rent a car in Zurich and drive to Venice? or is the train better? I will be in Italy for 2 weeks?

At some point during my trip I will need a car to explore the amalfi coast up to Lake como...I'm just triying to decide if I should have the car for the entire trip...or just part of it.Can I rent a car in Zurich and drive to Venice? or is the train better? I will be in Italy for 2 weeks?
Take a train from Zurich to Venice, and then rent a car in Italy. Driving is ok, but very tiring, especially in mountain region between Italy and Switzerland. Plus it is cheaper to rent a car in Italy than in Switzerland.
I would use a car for most of the trip but take the train for the Venice part only.

The railway station comes out right in the centre of Venice so is brilliantly located. Also, since Venice is spread across several islands and you'll be walking/taking boats, a car won't be a whole lot of use.

For the rest of your trip - The Lakes, Amalfi etc a car would be ideal. Can I rent a car in Zurich and drive to Venice? or is the train better? I will be in Italy for 2 weeks?
Use a car - you will see more from the country side
Definitely use the car for only part of the trip. Having a car in Venice will not do you any good, unless you are visiting Lido, a small island next to Venice. I used the trains in Italy without having any problems visiting sites that I wanted to see. However, a car is useful for some excursions out into the countryside.
    take the train trust me
That is a tough one, the first time I went to Europe I used Eurail and was very happy as I was visiting the cities mostly. I am going next month and am going to rent a car to see more of the countryside. I have been to both Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast WITHOUT a car. The train goes from Milan to Lake Como and you can take a bus down to the Amalfi Coast from Naples I believe. My trip was in '98. If you are a mountain lover, visit Interlaken, Switzerland and go up into the Berner Oberland, scenery you'll never forget.
You can do either... but the train is pretty damn cool, convenient and reasonable.
Take the train! For the trip from Zurich to the Italian border you can take a "panoramic wagon" and you'll have a great view of the alps (takes about 3 hrs)... In Italy the public transport is a bit less "luxurious" but in summer the traffic is just awful! I would take the train til Milan or so, and then rent a car locally and drive on smaller streets... (not motorway!)
