i was wondering if anyone knew how i would buy my eurorail.. i was wanting to go to MANY countries, even if some are just stops on the way to the longer destinations. Is there a eurorail pass that is unlimited travel for a month.. or something along those lines? i tried to look on the website but i didn't even know how to begin to look. My friend and i are planning on going from march-august, and we will start in ireland and travel for 4 months and end our trip in france and stay there with friends for the remaining two months. how do we begin to pack for this?! also, if it helps our stops will be (hope you're ready for a long list): Ireland, England, Belgium, Netherlands, Czech, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Greece, Albania, Croatia, Italy, Switz, South France, Spain, Portugal, and then back to france.
we Also may stop in germany and travel to poland as well, between netherlands and czech, we haven't decided.
Neither of us have backpacked before, but we have both lived in france for a year. Any information or tips you can share with us.. on ANYTHING would be helpful. This is our Graduation trip, so we want to make the most of it, as well as keep it as hassel free as possible.
And last but not least, anyone have recommendations on hostels.. that would be great, thank you soo much!I need help planning my euro trip?
Hi:
Quantity isn't always better than quality. I think you need to scale back your list of places to visit. You could easily spend just a month exploring Spain for example, and get a real feel for a country rather than just rushing through. It will make your impressions and newfound friendships stronger too. Forget eurorail. It won't work for that long of a time.
I've been to England, Netherlands, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal....while "home base" was Madrid for the year of 2006.
So here's my recommendations:
1. Spain speaks the least English of any of the European countries outside of Poland. If you do visit Spain go to the southern coast in July/August. Malaga/Costa del Sol etc.
2. Portugal is a paradise. Clean, really friendly people. Very english speaking friendly.
3. England is great but super expensive. Don't spend more than two nights in London.
4. Rome and Italy by themselves could take two months...but also up there in the price category. Best hostel in Rome: Bed and Breakfast Flavius 4 blocks from the Colisseum.
5. Netherlands: book a houseboat instead of a hotel..Google it.
6. You don't have to "do or see it all" now. Trust me, you will get back there to explore.
7. The metro/bus/trains are the best way to travel in Europe. It's set up for that.
8. Foodwise: there is a "menu al dia" or daily menu in most European countries. It is the best deal. For really cheap eats just do like the locals do and go to the bread store, the meat store, the olive store, and put your own picnic together. Shop beforehand and drink your beer/wine in your hostel and not in a bar.
9. Switzerland was even too expensive for me to visit. Hotels begin at $200 per night. They know how to keep the riffraff out.
10. Pack rain gear and spring/summer clothes. Make sure you have a pair of pants/purse with velcro pocket closures. Pickpockets can't get past the sound velcro makes.
Prague is also a must go place in Europe. From Prague, you can take an overnight train to Krakow. The places that you listed are nice place and it is along the way, good choice. From Krakow, you can take a 3 hr train ride to Warsaw and stay for 2 to 3 days before taking a 6 hr train ride to Berlin. Have fun!!!I need help planning my euro trip?
