I will be studying in Vienna this spring and there is a break from march 17 to April 6th. I would like to hit up the major cities of Europe for sure (stay in hostels) and I assume a Global Pass on the Eurorail is the way to go. BUT I would also love to be able to see northern Africa, major Asian cities and Australia/New Zealand.
a) is this too much traveling for a 3 week vacation?
b) Will it be extremely expensive? I'm wondering if a $2500 budget is good enough...
c) Do you have recommendations for an agenda? (Should I fly to Australia and backtrack)
d) Recommendations for modes of transportation? I know Eurorail is an efficient way to travel- what are great budget airlines in Europe? Asia? Australia?
e) Any other suggestions? recommendations? comments? Is there anyone with extensive foreign travel experience to assist with me planning a trip?
a) yes it is too much travel for 3 weeks. take it easy and plan your trip around Europe. There is much to see, and you will be able to better enjoy if you are not rushing all over the globe.
b)2,500 will be enough if you stay in Europe. A plane ticket to Australia will take up over half of your money. Same with Africa or Asia. Check out flight fares from Vienna on any of the major travel sites. (Expedia.com etc)
c)Since I think you should stay in Europe and see the sights, I would suggest, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Budapest, Barcelona, London, Copenhagen, Prague, and anyplace or interest the train might stop in between.
d) the train is good, and you can also find some cheap inter-Europe flights on ryanair.com, airberlin.com, easyjet.com, flybmi.com. Here is a list of other low cost airlines

e)have a great time, relax, don't rush yourself. Stay in Europe if you only have 3 weeks and a $2,500 budget. Don't waste half of your money just getting to someplace.
