How much would it cost to backpack around Europe for 1 1/2 months?

This is everything other than airplane flight. I want to go in a big circle and hit up these cities in order:

London, Paris, Barcelona, Lucerne, Venice, Florence, Rome, Athens, Istanbul, Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam.

I will stay in hostels and eat cheap market and supermarket foods. Might eat out once per big city. WIll take eurorail or bus. I am 26 so I can't get youth discounts. This will be next May and June. Thinking 2-4 days per city. 4 days per big city, 3 for medium etc.

Also are you able to sleep on bus's overnight? Are they comfortable? Or is that only possible on trains? How much would it cost to backpack around Europe for 1 1/2 months?
The budget per day should be somewhere in the $US 100 to 鈧?100 per day range depending on how much you want to spend on sight seeing and drinking.

If you are able to sleep everywhere you might be able to sleep in a bus, but most people do not sleep well in buses. Sleeping in a seat in a train is considered a bit better, a place to stretch out better still. If you are willing to pay for them you can get couchettes in a train, I think they are just good enough for sleeping but you will still not be fully rested when you arrive. But others think sitting up through the night is all you need for a good sleep.

I think most of your list is easy to do, but Athens and Istanbul will require flights, (or at least ferries) and I wonder if you are really willing to put that much more effort in. I know I never did.

In May and June you do not need to make hostel reservations other than for cities where a festival happens, and mostly you can get away with making reservations just a few days before arriving.

That allows you much freedom in how you actually travel, but if you want to fly to Athens and/or Istanbul reasonably cheap, you will have to book months before, taking all freedom out of your travels.

One small thing, all destinations on your list are cities, most pretty big, I think you miss out on the small towns and countryside, which makes such a big part of Europe.
Do not listen to Willeke. On average you won't need 100鈧?a day.
Hostels will cost about 20鈧? you said you will eat cheap supermarket food so that's around +15鈧? add transportation cost... it will be from 50-70鈧?a day.
I suggest Ljubljana or Bled on the way. Or one of the caves in Slovenia.

I agree with alexen about everything he said. How much would it cost to backpack around Europe for 1 1/2 months?
I think you can find hostels for 鈧?0 a night or even less, but you should book them in advance and not get to the city and start looking for them. Otherwise, if you wanna save money, there is something called Couchsurfing, where you can sleep on someone's couch. The cool thing is you get to meet people from the city you're in and get to know the local culture. I've done it lots of times all over Europe. The problem is you need to tell them in advance which day you are coming, so you constantly need internet on your trip, like in internet cafes, to tell them where you are.

Food can have different prices, every city has it's local food and I would really recommend it. Don't eat at McDonalds, you can do it in your country as well. ;)

In total I would say 鈧?0 a day are the minimum you will spend, which is around $75 I guess.

If you have time, come to the Alps, to the Dolomites, where I live! It's the most awesome place in Europe! ;)
