Anyone have hotel recommendations for the amalfi coast?

im going there this summer!!! for a week. ive been there before and loved it and decided to go back again this summer. from what my plans are, my parents and bf are going by car (i live in florence) to a hotel not in amalfi but in some other little town close by. the reason why is because from my last experience, i went there not only to visit amalfi, but visit napoli, pompeii, capri, sorento, ecc which isnt all that close. in fact the trip before we went there only from camp ground to camp ground, this time (since my parents are coming) we are going to a hotel where its about a 20 min. distance from all the places we want to visit, (napoli, sorrento, pompeii, amalfi, ecc). i dont remmeber the hotel name since my bf did the reservations and all, but if your really want to know contact me and i can find out the name and so on. from what they told met he prices were 35 euros per person including breakfast and in fact, its not really a hotel, but more like a villa where usually wedding parties are set so its not exactly a hotel, but a place to stay. ive heard its beautiful never seen a pic, but a friend from the area recommended us and since its only 35 euros per person, we dont really consider it being extremly beautiful or not, if it is or isnt, we just need a good place to sleep and spend the entire time outside of it visitng everthing eles.

Venere.com lists 136 accommodation options for the Amalfi Coast. at http://en.venere.com/mediterranean_sea/a鈥?/a>Anyone have hotel recommendations for the amalfi coast?
It really depends on two parameters: 1,. where do you want to be (Amalfi, Ravenna, Positano, etc.) and how much you want to spend. I would recommend Positano, and if money is no object, the Hotel Sirenuse. But if money is an factor, then check Tripadvisor.com. People like us give good candid remarks and ratings there.

You can find Weetabix in any major store, all over Italy I buy it regularly and eat it at breakfast with milk (have done since I was a schoolboy, Eons ago).

I live in Rome but travel all over Italy. never had a problem finding it.Has anyone seen Weet-bix in Venice or somewhere on the amalfi coast?
Yes - the Carrefour supermarkets often stock it.

Tips for visiting Amalfi coast, Italy?

Hi, is there anybody who could recommend best things to do whilst holidaying in the Amalfi coast? Also, would you say 7 nights there is too long? If so, what place would you recommend we split up our time in? I guess it would have to be a drivable distance from Naples.

Thanks!Tips for visiting Amalfi coast, Italy?
A week might be too long if you want to pack your days filled with activities. But if you wouldn't mind spending 3 days just lounging around, it's fine (and it's a nice place to lounge around).

The Amalfi coast is great. I recommend a boat trip to Capri (be sure to take a bus into the actual city). Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi are all wonderful cities to visit. If you visit Amalfi, be sure to take the bus up to Ravello...it's a nice village with an incredible view.

I recommend a trip to Pompeii. Yes, it's hot and dusty. But it's incredible. It's relatively cheap to hire a driver...and I bet you can enroll in a tour bus trip somewhere from the coast, which would be even cheaper.

If you want to be adventurous, stay a couple nights in Naples. It has great pizza and a couple of incredible museums. But beware of shady neighborhood and pick pocketers. Ischia, an island off the coast from Naples, is also suppose to be nice.

Rome is only a couple of hours from Naples and is easily accessible by train. Outside of Rome and the Amalfi Coast, there aren't many notable sites around Naples that I know of.Tips for visiting Amalfi coast, Italy?
Amalfi is nice, but I think that a week is a lot of time, if you are staying to rest, it's OK, you can have a lot of trips in the whereabouts, check with the Hotel: things to do vary almost every day.

Whats is the best hotel to stay at in Venice (or the Amalfi Coast) in Italy?

My dad %26amp; mom want 2 go on a vaca. 2 italy next summer, and they dont know what is the best hotel 2 stay in...plz help ^u^Whats is the best hotel to stay at in Venice (or the Amalfi Coast) in Italy?
There are so many hotels in Venice that it's impossible to advise on which would be the best for your parents. It really depends on how much they want to pay. One thing to remember is, for the real Venetian atmosphere, book a hotel in Venice itself, not in Venice Mestre which is on the mainland.

The Amalfi Coast also has lots of hotels to chose from of all different prices.

Suggest your parents buy a guidebook to Italy and check the different types of hotel available. Also have a look at hotel reviews etc on Trip Advisor http://www.tripadvisor.com
Do you really want the "best" or something reasonable? In Venice, the best would be he Cipriani http://www.hotelcipriani.com/web/ocip/ho鈥?/a> or the Danieli http://www.venere.com/hotels/venice/hote鈥?/a> which are extremely expensive. I use this site for hotels here in Italy: http://www.venere.com/italy/venice/ Usually I stay in the San Marco area of Venice and particularly like either the Selvadego http://www.venere.com/hotels/venice/hote鈥?/a> or the All'Angelo http://www.venere.com/hotels/venice/hote鈥?/a> . Both of these are very close to Piazza San Marco. For the Amalfi Coast, it depends on exactly when you go and which of the towns you want to stay in. there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely show you great hotels at the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it's very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online... otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.

Wedding venue ON the Amalfi Coast?

We're trying to find a place right on the Amalfi coast to get married. We'd love a place thats got lots of character, not too formal and ideally can fit around 80 people. It would also be great if there is around 40 rooms that we could hire out so our guests could stay in (or apartments to rent nearby for example). I realise I've been very picky, but If you've got any suggestions it would be much appreciated!!!

LucyHave you been to the Amalfi Coast recently?
i was just there this past summer! ive been there twice already and this summer was my second. i study in florence for the last 4 years and usually i head back every august, but this time my folks came to visit and i took them in to visit my favorite area in all of italy: AMALFI.

i dont mean to say, ONLY amalfi, i mean to say, everything around it, naples, pompeii, sorrento, amalfi, the coast, the beaches, capri, ecc..

    where should i start?

well, ill talk more about my experience than what is there just to give you and idea of things are there. all the names of the churches and hot spots you can find in guide book, but life style you have to be there to get an idea of it.

im not much into visiting monuments, i mean yeah i go there and see but i like seeing more little spots, hidden areas, little towns, thats more my style of visiting. for example there is a public beach in sorrento that is actually pretty hidden. there arent any signs nor nothign written in any of guide books, that explain where this hideout beach is. and the reason why i love is because its beautiful! the rock beach is located among some ancient roman ruins that dont appear at all to be maintained, so people go around it to the beach as if it never excisted. there is this real nice romantic hideout where its like a huge hole, at hte bottom touching sea level, the water is up to your waist and its all covered by walls adn there is this little passage that directs you to the sea.

i was there this summer and the weir dthing was..out of all the toursits there ni sorrento (this is located in sorrento), the place was almost isolated...thats how hidden it it! if you want the direction i have them written in this yahoo answers, ill give them to you at the end.

i discovered here in italy, that it IS true, the more south you go the more nicer people get. for example, the first year i was there, my bf and i went to this regular restaurant in sorrento. my bf is florentine. we were sitting there, had already ordered our menu when the waiter, who was a guy, came to us to ask us if we wanted some wine. my bf looked at it and said, 'no no' (quick and fast) in a lets say...'florentine way' which was no different than anyone else from there. but in real life looked kinda in a rude way and i noticed it, he didnt mean to it on purpose but it sounded like it and me being with him for over 3 years at that time, it didnt bother me but the look on the waiter kinda offended him..and then it clicked. my bf's reply was normal and not rude, while to the south that was considered rude. see the difference?

while we were driving around the coast we stopped at one of those little lemon booths. we asked the man, how much is it for one of those lemon cups? he said, '3 euros'. it was this tiny itty bitty little cup for 3 euros!! so we kinda gave a disgusted look, thinking we were obviously getting ripped off by looking like tourist, so we said, 'no thanks!' and turned around. that instant the man ran to us and said, 'ok ok...2 cups of 3uros!' we got the deal, but you can get an idea of how it is.

same thing happened at pompeii. i had visited pompeii earlier with my school and it had been during a cold february. outside of the pompeii ruins i had bought a huge huge large glass of red orange juice all for 1 euro. i figured it was low season that was the reason of the price. so this august, i was there again going with my parents as they entered teh pompeii ruins. i asked my bf to go see how much the red orange juice was sold for. he came back telling me it was 3 euros, and teh glass was small. i told him to get one either way since it was reasonable (the glass wasnt as tiny as the one in the lemon booth) he came back happy carring 3 large glasses, he told me he had mentioned that i had said aobut the 1euro i had paid long time ago during february and the people there for some reason said, 'ok ok, ill give it to you for 1 euro' i turned back and smiled at them...

i thought that was really cool of them, i guess they realized that i wanst lieing and they just happened to be in a good mood.

sorrento is a very elegant town, very clean, as well as the other towns along the amalfi coast. im saying that because naples and pompeii or the towns aroudn that are the opposite, they are extremly dirty towns, very filthy and not as safe as the amalfi coast and you wouldnt guess but its about half an hour distance.

oh if you care to know, the 'zanzare' (mosquitos) here in amalfi bite less than the big fat ones in florence. (juuuuussst in case you cared to know :) )

along the amalfi coast you can see a lot of lemon trees being grown. its actually a pretty site since they are located layer by layer only the steep hill/cliff.

dont ever travel without car along the amalfi coast. when i was there by car with my parents and my bf, all teh darn buses that were there carrying tourists got nothing but honks and yells by the people in car. it wasnt a pretty site for the poor toursits in side, i mean they kinda got the idea that they were hogging up the one lane route along the coast and it was impossibile for the bus drivers to stop the buses for them to take fotos. so DONT ever take a bus along the coast, your gonna get yelled at and no fotos allowed.

ok, thats all i can think of, if you have any questions feel free to ask :)
Looks great, I haven't been there, but that's the city my family's from. My name's Steven Amendola, and I'm a paisan.Have you been to the Amalfi Coast recently?
I have been there and I loved it. Absolutely stunning.

I stayed in the old harbour of Sorrento and to look out of my window to see the bay of Naples, the city itself and an amazing backdrop of the huge Mount Vesuvius was incredible.

There is so much to do. I went to explore Pompei, a day trip to Naples, a trip over to Capri and a boat ride to Positano and Amalfi itslef. The architecture is unreal, all the buildings are set into the cliffs - how this was acheived all them thousands of years ago is mind blowing. I saw a friend get married at Amalfi and my Uncle was married in Sorrento. I would go back in a heart beat. Stunning people, stunning food and stunning scenery.

Which is a better vacation destination in Nov ,the Amalfi Coast of southern Italy or Santorini Greece?

November is not necessarily the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast since it's part of the rainy season and some tourist oriented businesses will close, but it's not at all bad then either. The average daily highs in November are still in the 60s deg F (15 - 17 deg C) and the average low is a little below 50 deg F (10 deg C). The trade off is that it's much less crowded then and consequently easier to get around. Places like Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone in Ravello will be open for visits and you can still go to Capri.Which is a better vacation destination in Nov ,the Amalfi Coast of southern Italy or Santorini Greece?
Greece has major economic woes which will probably translate into higher tourist prices than normal. Amalfi is always expensive.

Try asking the tourist office (Pro Loco) in Ravello and Positano.

Ravello is high up with stunning views and Positano is on the coast - and steeply above it. Both are romantic.
I have just been to a non-religious wedding in Sorrento. That was beautiful, and had stunning views whilst they took their vows. They stayed at the Hotel Excelsior Vittora, which is very very expensive, but the happy couple got the honeymoon rooms free as they had their reception there. Gorgeous - go on splash out!

Where to stay in Amalfi Coast?

    Hi there,

I really need your help people. We are going to a holiday in Amalfi Coast...Basically, we have eight nights to spend there so we are thinking of spending 1/2 days in Naples, 2 days at Capri and then 3 days around the Amalfi coast (probably 1 night at Sorrento, 2 nights Pocitano). Not sure if this is a worth spent time for each of these locations...Also not sure where exactly is best to be based at Amalfi Coast. We are aware that this is not a "party place" of course but we would get depressed if we ended up at a town where there is not even a bar to have a nice drink in the evening.

    Please please please advice!

CheersWhere to stay in Amalfi Coast?
sorrento is beautiful, plenty to do, shop, eat, drink.

positano is even more beautiful, was there for a wedding last may, there's a nightclub called "music on the rocks" there that is carved into a cliff face, amazing place to be when moon is reflecting on the water in the bay...very romantic...ill never forget it(mega expensive though)
I have booked my wedding in Sorrento next year, but would've preferred Positano if they had more affordable hotels. For staying along the Amalfi Coast I would stick to Positano.

A friend of mine has just returned from ahoneymoon touring that area and said that the only place they didn't enjoy was Capri.

Have fun.Where to stay in Amalfi Coast?
This is a great question because it gives me the opportunity to recall so many great times at one of my most favorite areas in Italy. I've driven the Amalfi coast many times, at least 5, so here's my perspective.

I never stopped in Naples but Pompei is very cool if you have at least a half day to spare.

Capri is beautiful and you can easily spend 2 days exploring, shopping, taking pictures, and eating. It's not a hopping town but you can enjoy outdoor cafes and can find a few hidden, fun places to hangout outside the center of town for a drink or two. Wear comfortable shoes because there are no cars in the main part of the town. I've sat at the beach down by Faraglioni and done the Blue Grotto. I never ventured to Anacapri but that's an option, too. 2 days is good.

Sorrento is okay so I think 1 day will be sufficient. There are some great craftsmen in the town and you'll have to seek out some Lemoncello. It's perhaps the largest town on the island so you could spend another half-day or so if you combine it with the ferry ride to Capri.

Positano is perhaps the gem of the Amalfi coast. Again, comfortable shoe and strong legs are in order. You can lounge on the beach, there are pleny of quiet places for a drink, and tons of shopping. Ceramics and clothing are big. It's small so you'll see most of it in 1 day but take time to relax and soak it all up.

The coast is not that long so using Sorrento or Positano as a base will work. Positano would be my pick because it's on the more pictureseque side of the peninsula. From there, it's worth spending some time to got to Amalfi and maybe heading up to Rovello - if you're into exploring rather than sitting. You really owe it to yourselves to explore the coast though. Every corner is a photo opportunity so don't be afraid to hit the road. Maybe reserve a day just to drive from Positano to Salerno and back, making some stops along the way.

I think your intinerary is very well thought out. It's more a matter of how adventurous you are and what type of vacation you're looking for (relaxing or exploring).

    Divertiti!!!!

Exlporing Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast in Italy...?

I would like to visit Rome, and take a guided tour or two, but would really like to see/explore the Amalfi Coast - Sorrento, Ravello, etc. - on my own. I've never been to Europe, but am planning a 7-9 day vacation. Is it easy to get from Rome to Sorrento/Amalfi via train or bus (not interested in renting a car - heard it is treacherous)? Any suggestions advice would be MOST appreciated. Thank you.Exlporing Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast in Italy...?
From Rome, you can easily reach Amalfi by train: you should change in Napoli and Salerno or just in Salerno (which is very near to Amalfi), according to schedule; or you can take a bus in Salerno for all resort on Amalfi coast.
I go to Capri every year, which is an island close to Sorrento, etc. My husband and I usually take the train from Rome Termini station to Napoli Centrale. The port is a short distance from the train terminal in Napoli. From there, you can take a ferry to any of the islands.

The train ride from Rome to Napoli takes a few hours, so I prefer to take the Eurostar - it's more expensive, but faster and nicer seats, including assigned seating. There's plenty of room for your luggage, and you can buy your tickets at the terminal. The ferries run very regularly for most of the day - but I would suggest trying to get down there early. We prefer to go to Mergellina station, but I'm not sure how often the ferries run from there. If you have any questions, you can contact the hotel directly. Most hotels in that area will make all the travel arrangements on request and charge it directly to the room.Exlporing Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast in Italy...?

  • How far is the Amalfi Coast from Florence in Italy?

If you're driving it takes about 4 hours from Florence to Naples (489 km) and then roughly another 2 hours to Amalfi.

By train it takes about 3 hours 20 minutes (high speed trains) from Florence to Naples, then you have a choice of ferry, bus or taking a train to Sorrento (circumvesuviana trains) and then a SITA bus. The circumvesuviana trains run about every 30 minutes or you can take the SITA bus from Naples to Amalfi.

You could also take a train from Florence to Salerno (the best connection is changing in Rome, but there are other options; 4 hr 23 min). In Salerno the SITA bus, runs along the Amalfi coast, or there are ferries that are faster. The boats are about 10 minutes from the train station.

    Amalfi Coast in early November?

I am planing a trip to Sorrento, Capri, and Amalfi coast in early November. I am concerned if this time of the year is too cold.Amalfi Coast in early November?
I lived in Naples for four years and we would often visit the Amalfi coast and Capri. I think the best time time to visit is the Spring/Summer if you enjoy the beaches, but it's so beautiful that even in the cold you will enjoy all the beauty it has to offer! I can only tell you that every November I lived in Italy it was always cold. Nothing that a good winter jacket couldn't handle, but still a bit cold. Enjoy your visit! It's an amazing place:)
The Amalfi Coast in November will be pretty quiet but the temperatures aren't too bad. The average high for the month is 17 deg C (62 deg F). The overnight low averages 7 deg C (45 deg F). Obviously, it tends to be colder later in the month. But it can also be windy and rainy sometimes - November is the rainiest month of the year.Amalfi Coast in early November?
    Well...

I don't think that it will be so cold..but maybe rainy!

So you can't fly there in October!

Weekend Away - At Amalfi coast or Lake Como, which should I choose and why, please advise me.....Thanks?

Choose the Amalfi coast for sure. It is so gorgeous and so fun. Lake Como is pretty, but the Amalfi Coast is prettier and more memorable. It is also beyond romantic to have an evening meal in a quaint restaurant watching the sunset over the ocean. Trust this old nomad. Just do it!Weekend Away - At Amalfi coast or Lake Como, which should I choose and why, please advise me.....Thanks?

    Take me with you!!!
yeah, it is a nice coastal area in Italy, But I have to mention the truth, now it is not same as early days, but still it is good place to visit. June, July and August is peak season to beach areas, so, book your hotel rooms early to avoid hassle, rate might go up and good places may finish the room availability as well.

searh, your prefered cities, Amalfi, Ravello, Positano

you can visit Capri, Sorrento, Pompei while visiting amalfi coastHolidays in the amalfi coast?
    go there it's wonderfulllllllllllllllllllllllllll
Maiori and Minori are the most beautiful places in the whole Amalfi coast (well, it's just my opinion!)...my grandfather was from that area, so I used to go there on vacation every summer! As for the hotels, you could look up some websites...I usually use hostels (which in Italy are very good): if you're interested in finding some info on hostels, just google "hostelworld" and you'll find what you want!

Southern Italy is the food paradise, so I can't really recommend you a particular place to eat...and remember that in Italy everything is within walking distance, so you don't have to worry about where to book your hotel, especially in those southern towns...you'll be surprised to see how cars and buses are superfluous here!

Enjoy your trip, the Amalfi coast is one of the most wonderful places in Italy!

You can buy it without the inclusive flights and arrange your own flights from the US.

We have great experiences with this Company.I want to cruise/sail the amalfi coast. which is the cheapest and best option?
The very best way, and the cheapest in my mind if you go off season, is not to cruise, but to stay on land in one of the small cities such as Positano and drive or take the local bus, which operates up and down the Amalfi Coast, for pocket change... It gives you a better chance to experience the cliff cities and you can easily rent a boat and captain from your hotel for a day. Just a suggestion from someone who has been there several times....

If you decide to go this route, check out Venere.com, a great website that has all sorts of Italian hotels, B %26amp; B's and Agriturismo's to stay in.....

Enjoy one of my favorite places in Italy!!!!!

Nice, white sandy beach on the Amalfi coast?

Good shopping in the Amalfi Coast, Italy?

I'm going to Italy with my family in a few weeks, were staying in Amalfi Coast. Our house is in Praiano. Where is there good shopping in Praiano and in the towns around it/in amalfi. If you know any stores or boutiques it would be extremely helpful to write the names! I'm 15 and I'm looking to buy clothes, shoes, and accessories ect. I don't know the names of the stores but there are alot of shops in Sorrento and in the Capi Island. alittle on the expensive side

Is there a company that offers dinner boat tours of the Amalfi Coast leaving Sorrento?

Something reasonable in cost (not a private tour). I'll be there in late October 2006. An internet link would be most helpful. Is there a company that offers dinner boat tours of the Amalfi Coast leaving Sorrento?
I've not seen any boat tours from Sorriento.

There are some from Naples, with side tours, to Capri.

You might like Capri if you can stay over a night or two, in Naples or Capri.

Amalfi is fabulous in itself. There is an underground cave and river tour along the Amalfi coast, but I never did that. I'm not sure it is open in October. Much is closed by then.

  • Cheap self-catering accommodation in Positano/Amalfi Coast?

I'm looking to take my boyfriend to Italy in September and have fallen in love with the thought of the Amalfi coast. A friend recommended Positano. Would like to stay in self catering accommodation but a hotel would be fine. Just wondered if anyone had any recommendations of cheap apartments/hotels? Also, any tips on transport from Naples to Amalfi/Positano?

    Thanks!Cheap self-catering accommodation in Positano/Amalfi Coast?
That's a good recommendation, that part of the Italian coastline is nothing short of spectacular. Positano, Sorrento and Amalfi are all great, beautiful views and scenic drives.

Try this link for self catering accommodation http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/conca鈥?/a> it's for Positano but...here are some tips:

    - scroll down to the hotel search enter some dates and wait for the hotel search results (Don't worry that it says hotels and not apartments)

    - when the results are returned you can check the Sorrento options or enter "Positano" into the search

    - Now see the bottom left of the menu where it say "property type" uncheck all the blocks except for "Apartment", and it will leave you with a choice of apartments

    - Do read through the tourist reviews (if they have) they are a really good insight

    Enjoy!Cheap self-catering accommodation in Positano/Amalfi Coast?
Try visiting the Homelidays.com site, I found the other sites only offered the top end of the range villas... You can find a lovely ordinary house on homelidays, and usually the ads are well detailed.

How to Travel the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Capri and Naples?

Hi, we (2 girls) have approx 5 days to travel the Amalfi Coast all the way to Naples where we fly out from. However, what is the best way to travel the coast? We were told that renting a car is a death wish, another was to do a bus tour however these seem to be super expensive. We are on a tight budget......any suggestions? How to Travel the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Capri and Naples?
I don't agree with the "renting a car is a death wish" statement. I'm an American who has traveled to Italy at least a dozen times and rented a car on the majority of those trips and I'm still alive :-) I've driven the Amalfi coast - twice - without any issues. Of course, you need to be careful and somewhat proficient with a manual transmission. Even if you're not used to the manual, it's not hard to learn...

This region is such a beautiful area of the country that should be explored without the typical 1 hour time limits of your average bus tour.

For short term car rentals (less than 1 week), I've had good luck renting from the Italian company Easy Car Spa (http://www.easycaritalia.it/defaultnew.a鈥?/a> They charge a flat rate of 鈧?9 per day (including the required insurances) for an economy car with unlimited mileage. It doesn't matter what office you pick it up from as long as you return it to the same place. You can also check www.1800flyeurope.com for rates. They usually have cheaper rates if you are renting for longer than 1 week.

    Good luck!
u dont want to rent a car because the roads r tight and u need to learn how to drive their first which is time u do not have. Use a ferry, taxi, tour bus, dont forget to try the pizza(do not go to americanized area with alot of tourists u will not see th real italy that way go to eat where there are less tourists to get the real feel of Italia . Trust me i go every summer i speak it and am 100% italian i lne in Naples. It is great u shoulg try the Rabbit at Ischia wich is nezt to capri ,procida, and monte di procida have fun...How to Travel the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Capri and Naples?
when u get to naples go by ferry.isle of capri 45 mins away. when in capri do a boat trip aroond island.i have just come back .and your right dont drive unless your nigel mansell or you have a tank.
You don't need a bus tour...just take the local SITA buses - they're wonderful (and used by locals too) you won't get anywhere faster in a car becasue you will be stuck behind a bus anyway :-) Always fun to rent scooters in Sorrento and get around that way to Amalif/Positano, etc. Take the train to Naples...the ferry to Capri. Have fun!

Its on the other side of the bay of Naples. Its very nice but very touristie and only has shopping really the views are great but I don't know if its worth driving from Lake Garda to see it unless you do other things in the Naples area like Pompii or Mt. Veriuso.

    In Naples at Southern side of Italy. %26lt;*-*%26gt;

    ADD:

    61km (38 miles) SE of Naples, 18km (11 miles) E of Positano, 34km (21 miles) W of Salerno, 272km (169 miles) SE of Rome

From its position at the slope of the steep Lattari hills, it overlooks the Bay of Salerno. The approach to Amalfi is dramatic, whether you come from Positano or from Salerno.
It's in the Gulf of Salerno just south of Naples... on the Italian peninsula's south west coast.

If you have time you should do both the Italian north and south to take in the differences... and to enjoy a most picturesque lake and the blue waters of the Med.
It's in a region called Campania. Napoli is also located in this region. If you decide to go, do not miss Positano. It's called "The Pearl of the Mediterranean Sea"...

What should I wear to the Amalfi Coast, Italy?

Im going for 2 weeks in June, I don't really know the trends...What should I wear to the Amalfi Coast, Italy?
Light clothes its warm or hot most of the year. If you like bright colours you may want to buy a few things on your trip, in Positano!!!! You`ll see what I mean when you get there.
Beautiful place, they aren't really into fashion down there, they are all country. Maybe bring some, long bohemian like skirts, of course a bathing suit, thin long sleeve shirts, cute ruffly tank tops, sandals, I would say the style is a relaxed, sea side, Mediterranean, hippie chic maybe if you want to get technical. Just don't bring any shirts that say stupid things on them, sweat pants or tapered acid wash jeans. What should I wear to the Amalfi Coast, Italy?

I'm going to Italy - Amalfi coast this summer, is it a good idea to wear shorts/miniskirts on nights out?

or just around the towns during the day? I will be with my parents mostly at all times anyway, is there anything to be worried about, because it does get quite hot there so wearing long clothes there would probably NOT be a good idea but people say that some local boys can be extremely pervy - true?I'm going to Italy - Amalfi coast this summer, is it a good idea to wear shorts/miniskirts on nights out?
Only if you don't mind being pinched here and there. The Italian boys can be quite forward.

Enjoy the Amalfi coast! It's beautiful over there!
Italian guys will undoubtably hit on you, but they would even if you were wearing a garbage bag. Wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing, unless you REALLY look like a prostitute your not likely to run into any problems. If anyone is a little too enthusiastic just say "Lasciami in pace!" phoenetically, "la-sha-mi in pa-chey" with the emphasis on "la" and "pa" (put a little force into it though or it won't be very believable). Have a good time!I'm going to Italy - Amalfi coast this summer, is it a good idea to wear shorts/miniskirts on nights out?
I'm a college student, just studied in Italy for the year, honestly Italians will hit on you even if you have a mask on-they harass literally anything that walks. During the day the Italian women will most likely give you dirty looks if you're wearing a skirt/shorts (they hate it because italian men are so obsessed with american girls) but at night it's fine! good luck and have fun, amalfi is gorgeous =)
Italian men are no different from blokes anywhere in the world...perhaps abit more cheeky when hanging with their mates. We all enjoy looking at a beautiful girl...no harm in looking, just dont touch..dress as you are comfortable and have a wonderful time, spesh Positano and Capri (stay the night here, not the same as a day tripper)
wear what you want. honestly, i would wear sundresses to cover your bottom half more, if you know what i mean. otherwise, you'll catch the guys staring at that region. they'll stare at you even if you're with your parents. dresses are also more appropriate for dinner.
Don't wear mini skirts. however wearing a Fairly short skirt is fine. But italian men are just like all other men in the world. You would seem a slut if you were to wear a mini skirt. I have neapolitan relatives and stay with them often and i know the views and ways neapolitans think. Napul m manc!!
Well, you can get pervy guys everywhere, so wear what you like, obviously without looking like a slut, since you will be with your parents, it should be fine.
No we in Italy is summer usually wear burka...

where do you think we are here...on the moon?

just pathetic and racist....stay there where you are....fed up really of this bunch of ignorant racists over here....stay there with the fantastic drunk chavs you are used to...
Holidayed in italy quite a bit, the italians are well dressed and fashonable so were what u normally would. As for the guys they are not pervy just a lot more 4ward than uk men esp if u are blonde or a red head!
Yes, it is a good idea... I'm italian and I don't speak english very well sorry... Amalfi is very beautiful... I hope that you have a good travel!!
hi i'm italian: yes, here in italy is very very very very hot this summer!!^^

you should wear summer clothes ^^

    ciao buone vacanze!!! XD
Mini-skirts or a sundress will be OK, but don't wear the shorts out at night or you really will get some unwanted attraction.
I think that during the day, they tend to look at you funnier than they do at night... the Italians are very fashion conscious.
If you have no aversion to some "Pinchy Winchy", no problem.
We do not pervy. We are only giving nice to pretty girls that we see.
I only say that today in Italy there are 30 - 34掳C...and we are in june!!! in july and august it's not better...

  • Is the circumvesuvia rail on the amalfi coast easy to navigate?

any advice ?Is the circumvesuvia rail on the amalfi coast easy to navigate?
Yes, it's very easy. There are only a couple of lines, so it's hard to go wrong. Most of the things you're likely to want to see are on the line between Naples and Sorrento. Pompeii is the Pompei - Scavi stop. Herculaneum is the Ercolano - Scavi stop. It's also inexpensive. There's a trip planner here: http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en/Orari

Note that the Circumvesuviana doesn't cover the whole Amalfi Coast though; the end of the line is at Sorrento. Beyond that, you'd need to take the bus from the train station in Sorrento or a boat from the marina (walking distance).

You can stay in any town along the Amalfi Coast and it will be gorgeous! Amalfi and Positano are the better-known towns, but expensive. Try one of the smaller towns for a fraction of the cost - Praiano, Maiori, or Minori. Definitely use the bus which runs along the coast road - so you can enjoy the fabulous views. Make sure you sit on the side of the bus closest to the water!

How much to expect to pay to get married on Amalfi coast? ?

No wedding, just eloping- how much can I expect to be charged for someone to marry us? Gonna do it in Positano I thinkHow much to expect to pay to get married on Amalfi coast? ?
the most inexpensive way to marry in positano is to go to the register's office for a civil ceremony. they are located in a pretty little building on top of the hill and have an outdoor terrace where they will do the ceremony. you can even decorate it a little if you wish. it is a fantastic view. and you can put in your own vows etc.

you will need to contact the registry office in positano to inquire about the cost of the license and performing the ceremony, which they will do in english. you will need to have all the proper papers as well, which is what will probably cost the most...getting all of that together and translated into italian.

positano weddings are lovely. you should do the walk through the town dressed in your bridal clothes. people will come out to wish you well and will even follow you to view the ceremony if you wish it.

I have a little less than 18 days in europe and would like to visit barcelona, paris most of the amalfi coast?

in italy and then we want to finish off with a eastern mediterranean cruise.. covering venice and greece. Please any ideas on where I should start and how I go about the traveling.I have a little less than 18 days in europe and would like to visit barcelona, paris most of the amalfi coast?
There's a list of cruises from Venice here: http://www.cruisecompete.com/vacations/d鈥?/a> The cruises take 7 or more nights which will take a significant portion of your time. They also only sail on specific dates so you'll want to plan travel dates to make the cruise if you really want to include all of these things. Since the places you're trying to see are pretty wide-spread, you'll be doing a lot of travel.

You can find information on budget flights here: http://www.skyscanner.it/ or http://www.whichbudget.com/ . In addition to RyanAir from Beauvais airport, EasyJet and Air Europa have cheap flights to Barcelona from Charles De Gaulle airport and Vueling flies to Barcelona from Orly airport. There is also the option of an overnight train leaving Paris Austerlitz station at 8:34 pm and arriving in Barcelona at 9:09 am. If you do this, you don't have to deal with transfers to and from airports, getting to the airport early to check-in and get through security, or waiting forany checked bags on arrival. Plus, you can sleep through the night while you travel. http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.s鈥?/a>

If you want to go to the Amalfi Coast, don't fly into Rome, fly into Naples which is much closer. Either Spanair or Vueling have budget flights from Barcelona. The Naples airport website is here: http://www.portal.gesac.it/portal/page/p鈥?/a> . There are buses from the airport to Sorrento where you can change to a bus or boat along the Amalfi coast or you can take the bus into the city and take the Circumvesuviana train from Piazza Garibaldi to the Sorrento.

You can check the site above for flights to Venice or take the train from Naples to Venice. http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepag鈥?/a> Note that it is only a 5.5 hr trip from Naples to Venice including a train change (usually in Rome). The fast trains have cut travel times here significantly. Another option is to take the night train from Naples to Venice. It takes longer, but much of the travel time is time you would be sleeping anyway and you save on the cost of a hotel for the night. The train leaves Naples at 7:57 pm and arrives in Venice at 5:26 the next morning. http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepag鈥?/a>
Well, you can start off in Paris and stay there for 3-4 days before catching a budget flight to Spain. if you are flying with ryanair, you will have to go to Beauvais Airport, you have to buy a bus ticket which cost 13 euros for one wayas there are no alternative and you will not want to take a taxi from Paris. The nearest metro to the bus station to Beauvais Airport is Pont De Neuilly (Line 1-Yellow). It is oppopsite a hotel (i forgot the name of the hotel). There will be a small booth there and you can see the price. Buses departs every hour and the journey will take noe hour or so.

The plane will touch down at Girona, which is one hour by bus from Barcelona. You can spend about 2 days in Girona before going by bus to Barcelona. The bus journey from Girona airport to Girona city centre is only 25mins. The bus station is opposite the train station where you can take a train to Barcelona as well. From Barcelona, you can catch a budget flight to Rome (you have to go back to Girona to catch the flight). It is only 1 hr and you can take a bus from the Fiumicino airport in Rome to the city centre. you can in fact by the bus ticket at Girona Airport.

The bus from Fiumicino airport wil take you to the city centre where it will stop at Roma termini (bus station). From there you can ask the travel agency located there around for the med cruise or take a train from Roma Termini to Venezia (Venice), which takes 5 hours.

Hope it will help you.I have a little less than 18 days in europe and would like to visit barcelona, paris most of the amalfi coast?
I recommend that you fly in to Paris. Have a couple days there.

Get a budget ticket to fly from Paris to Barcelona. From there take a plane to Rome.

From Venice you can finish off with the cruise you want.

Spend 3-4 days at each location. For Barcelona, I can recommend you a pretty good website: PromptGuides.com. They offer free, preplanned city guides optimized for 1, 3 and 5 days. So at least you don't have to plan what to do there. Use the following link: http://www.promptguides.com/barcelona/gu鈥?/a>

Hope it helps. Have a great time in Europe.

Capri and Sorrento or drive the Amalfi Coast to Amalfi?

I have one extra day in Naples November 5th. I will visit Pompeii and tour Naples on the 4th. Should I visit Capri and Sorrento or should I drive the Amalfi Coast to the town of Amalfi? Please don't tell me to do both. Ican't spend any more time there.Capri and Sorrento or drive the Amalfi Coast to Amalfi?
If you've only got a day, Sorrento or Capri would be good. You'll use less of your time in transit. You can get to Capri directly from Naples by taking the boat from Molo Beverello. http://www.capri.net/en/ship-timetable

The Amalfi coast is better to visit when you have more time. Amalfi is only one of the towns worth visiting there.
    Capri, Capri.....

We spent a week on Capri and day tripped out against the hoards of tourists. Which you should miss in November.

On Capri, get out of the main plaza quickly and head up or down. We liked the hike to Tiberius's home, a wonderful stroll. We love Italy in the Fall but we did Capri over Easter, I'm curious what Capri is like in November.

    Vacanza, Vacanza.... Ciao.

TexasCapri and Sorrento or drive the Amalfi Coast to Amalfi?
I am in love with Sorrento, so laid back, the shopping there is unique, with gazillions of outside vendors. I enjoyed the closeness, everything within walking distance, felt safe
I gotta vote for Capri.......everyone should see it at least once!

    Just breathtakingly beautiful.
Great question... but tough to answer!

It all depends on what you like to do.

Sorrento is by far the busiest - with lots of things to do but also very "Neapolitan," chaotic, lots of traffic.

Capri is the most touristic... and expensive. But, it's one of those things (like taking a gondola ride in Venice) that you just have to do!

Amalfi will be the more serene... and the drive on the "Amalfitana" is an experience in itself! Especially around sunset... surreal.

So, the answer really lies with you and what you are looking for with this experience.

Personally, from my experience in traveling Italy, you can throw Sorrento out. Both Amalfi and Capri offer the same things for a day trip with all the chaos.

Then, Amalfi isn't as touristic as Capri... and the drive is fantastic. But Capri is something everyone should do once - even though it isn't exactly "authentic" Italy (Ischia can give you a better taste of that, if your looking for something more authentic.)

My vote? For the average traveler never planning to come back to the area again - go to CAPRI!

A little touristy for my taste... but you'll love it ;-)

If you need anything else feel free to contact me!

Well I think it is too expensive these are the option you can have

1Train you must go to Salerno first then from Salerno: SITA bus to Amalfi/Positano

2 Circumvesuviana (which is an inner train) from Napoli, inside the Central Station

3SITA bus strigth from Napoli (also near to the Central Station)

    4 Ferry (from the port)

    5 Taxi

1 This is easy since you take the train to Salerno and then from there take the bus to Positano, you pay a bit more then option 2 and have to make sure to take the connecting bus, anyway all are scheduled so with a bit of planning can be done.

2 this is relatively cheap and easy since there are scheduled train every day. It is advisable not to take the train late in the day (aprox 5 Euro per person)

3 this is the cheapest, also easy to get but you must make sure to take the right one, so unless you don't speak a bit of italian this could be a bit problematic. (aprox 3 Euro)

4 This is relatively expensive, and you mast get to the port, it however a nice trip since you see the all bay, there are scheduled ferries and there is also a web site where to check

5 This is the most expensive way to get there, yon may even go for for 100 Euro.

Anyhow did you check with your hotel if there is a pick up service, normally it should be it or it could be arranged (however this also could be expensive)

  • On the Amalfi Coast is it better to stay at Sorrento or Positano?

I want to be in an attractive town/village and do some serious sunbathing and swimming in the sea during the summer, which of these two is the best to stay in and why?On the Amalfi Coast is it better to stay at Sorrento or Positano?
Sorrento is more package deal tourism, flatter, noisier and bigger, whereas Positano is more select, very steep with vehicles unable to get to most houses and hotels, there are just alley ways and steps between the building - and it's generally more expensive and favoured by 'The Beautiful People'

Whichever you go to, make sure you visit the other and don't bother taking a carto either. The roads are narrow, twisting, vertiginous and in summer an endless traffic jam with parking almost impossible. The bus and boat servies are more than adequate for a couple of weeks holiday.

    Enjoy whichever you go to.
sorrento is much larger and busier - Pos is very idealic, and very hilly.

I honeymooned on the Amalfi Coast last summer and agreed with my wife that Positano was the highlight. We took a boat to Amalfi, hung out a little, which was pretty good, then took a cab to the mountain town of Ravello for the most fantastic dinner at the Palazzo Sasso on a rail overlooking the most spectacular view I've ever seen. We also took a day trip to Capri, and the Blue Grotto, which was fantastic. (TIP: buy some perfume at Carthusia, their homegrown fragrance company). Let me tell you, this Amalfi Coast is your place. But you have to be in good shape, because you'll be going up and down stairs like crazy! Positano isn't called "The Vertical City" for nothing! Wow.Recommendations for a trip to Naples/Amalfi Coast?
Having just returned from a ten day Mediterranean cruise, and having visited Naples, I highly recommend booking a day trip of the Amalfi coast through www.amalficoastdrivers.com. Check out the website. I found it on www.tripadvisor.com with very high reviews. My family, consisting of a 7 year old, two teenagers, father, mother, and two grandparents (one with a bad knee), found that our driver, Carmine, accommodated to our needs more than expected. The breathtaking landscape of the Amalfi Coast was showed to us while driving in a luxurious Mercedes van blaring Italian music. Carmine's attitude was infectious as he proudly explained every aspect of his home land. I cannot vouch for their other tours, but as for touring the Amalfi coast, there is no doubt in my mind which tour you should choose. www.amalficoastdrivers.com
Don't drive yourself in a car along the Amalfi coastline. It's hectic and you will be worried about damage to the car. Either use a motorcycle/scooter or be driven (e.g. on a tour bus).
Stop off in Positano, it's amazing. Bring good walking shoes though.

My husband and I are traveling to Italy this summer. Which is better to visit: Cinque Terre or Amalfi Coast?

We have about 4 days of our trip to devote to one of these areas. We are looking for a place to relax, but also see some sights. Thanks! My husband and I are traveling to Italy this summer. Which is better to visit: Cinque Terre or Amalfi Coast?
Better is really a personal judgement. The two have some similarities, but offer different experiences. I like them both, but go to Cinque Terre more often only because it's closer to where I live in northern Italy.

Cinque Terre is a great place to hike the trails and enjoy the small towns. For relaxation, it's a good spot. If you go, you can get a day ticket for the train system that's cheap, but traveling between the towns on foot or by boat is much more scenic - most of the train route is through tunnels.

In Amalfi, there are more varied activities/sites close by (Pompeii, Capri, Vesuvius, Sorrento) and more shopping. Amalfi is more spread out, you'll need to take advantage of public transportation unless you have a car. If you do drive on the Amalfi Coast, just remind yourself that people pay big bucks to go to Disney for rides that are far less thrilling (or scenic).

Where else are you going on your trip? One or the other of these may fit in better geographically with the rest of your itenerary.
OMG...Cinque Terre is beautiful!!! But so is the Amalfi Coast...

Cinque Terre has a colorful history, wonderful people, very laid back, and has coastal front beaches!

Amalfi is just a bay really...but the water is just beautiful. The area's a bit overcrowded, but the area's busy.

I'd say go to both! 2 days a piece, more than enough time!My husband and I are traveling to Italy this summer. Which is better to visit: Cinque Terre or Amalfi Coast?
I've never been to either and i've been in and oput of Italy for nearly 30 years.

I would go to Cinque Terre if I needed to relax. The idea of being in the Amalfi area doesn't bring to my mind peace and quiet.

I visited last summer, very beautiful.
    Cinque Terre
I think you sould visit both of them.
    Hi,

since both have amazing sights and reveal, each on its way, the "spirit" of Italy, you should make your choice using other criterias. Even though summer season is not the best time to relax in those places (they might appear crowdy and chaotic), you could find luxury places of relax as very high quality hotels and private "villas". Hence, you should be prepared to high rates too. Remember that Amalfi coast in particular is one of the favorite places of VIPs.
they are two famous tourist resort to visit.

if you will visit of the cities in the Italy north you are neighbor to CINQUE TERRE

if you will visit of the cities in the center - south Italy the Amalfi Coast goes well.

We will be there this March, and I'd rather avoid that crazy bus ride between Sorrento and Positano if I can. Ferry looks perfect. Help?Looking for a ferry schedule for the Amalfi coast in March?
The Metro' del Mare service has been suspended - it only runs in the summer and fall. The main service picks up in June with the start of the tourist season. Many of the ferry services are shut down for the season since there's much less demand in the off season - some restart toward the end of March,

I am going to be in Florence and going to the Amalfi Coast, is there a high speed first class train?

I am visiting Italy and doing some sight seeing; I am going to be in Florence until Tuesday then want to go spend 2 days on the Amalfi Coast then go to Venice and spend another 2 days.

I was going to rent a car but I have heard the high speed trains are pretty good and avoid the hassle with having a car and renting one.I am going to be in Florence and going to the Amalfi Coast, is there a high speed first class train?
    Yes there is.

The "Ferrovie Statali" have a high speed train called "EuroStar" that goes from Florence "Santa Maria Novella" station to Napoli "Centrale" station. The trip usually lasts under 4 hours.

From Napoli, you have to take a much slower but very scenic train to the coast. It is like a overland subway that goes through some amazing places like Pompeii and ends in Sorrento. From there, you can take ferries to Capri, Positano, etc....

For the link see below or go to http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

Have fun and take care.I am going to be in Florence and going to the Amalfi Coast, is there a high speed first class train?
There is a first class train to Naples, but from there you have to take the little local train that goes around the Gulf of Naples. The train station in Naples is a confusing place... you arrive in the main train station upstairs, then have to buy tickets for the local train, and then go downstairs to the local train station. When I was there the train broke down before getting to Sorrento and they transferred all the passengers to buses. The bus took us to another train station to wait for a working train... a couple hours. I recommend driving...

We are travelling from Corfu by ferry and expect to arrive in Brindisi around the 23 June this year. Any help would be appreciatedIs there public transport from Brindisi to the Amalfi coast and how long would this trip take?
Yes, there is. One option would be to take the train from Brindisi to Salerno (with a change in Taranto). From Salerno you can take a boat of bus along the Amalfi coast. Train schedules are here: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepag鈥?/a> . The schedules for the boats %26amp; buses are here: http://www.amalficoastweb.com/amalfi/eng鈥?/a>

Is driving the amalfi coast dangerous, or is it easy ?

I know people drive on the wrong side of the raod, but is driving along the coast relatively easy for people who have never been?Is driving the amalfi coast dangerous, or is it easy ?
The roads on the Amalfi coast are very narrow and especially the local bus drivers, drive very fast ... but if you are careful and not afraid of oncoming traffic on your side of the road, it is easy enough to drive ...

    I never had a problem
I think it really all depends on your driving skills and your conficence level... driving on the Amalfi coast is not for the faint hearted.. lol..

lots of tight curves, fast driving and buses that take up whole curves (listen for the horns, they麓ll honk them before they go around a curve and take up the whole street - when you hear it, stay where you are and wait for them to pass)

It is definitely worth the trip though as it is gorgous! I just got back from the area last night :-)Is driving the amalfi coast dangerous, or is it easy ?
It really isn't that difficult to drive the Amalfi Coast road, but it can be very exciting. It's certainly more thrilling than anything they have at Disney. I was there not long ago with a group of consultants; most of the passengers enjoyed the spectacular views, but one of them refused to open her eyes the whole time we were on the road due to the traffic.
Basically what they said above, but when you say they drive on the wrong side of the road, that depends on where you are from. They drive on the same side of the road as the U.S.A. so... lol

  • Is the amalfi coast safe to travel alone?

im a guy who wants to see italy mainly the amalfi coast region.is it safe to travel here alone day/night? is there any nightlife? regarding the weather what is typical to clothes to wear, footwear also?Is the amalfi coast safe to travel alone?
It's as safe as anywhere in the UK. Pickpockets are the most likely problem. They prey on obvious groups of tourists. If you're on your own, and blend in with the locals, they'll probably leave you alone.

If you're over 12, don't wear shorts. That marks you out as a tourist to the pickpockets and as homosexual to the locals. Last time I was there, most youngish men were wearing casual trousers and long sleeved shirts - with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow. But fashions change. Is the amalfi coast safe to travel alone?
It is a beautiful place with a variety things to do including nightlife. You will need a few smart things if you plan to go out in the evenings. Regarding safety - I can't really comment, they certainly don't have an abnormally high crime rate, but muggings and attacks happen everywhere in the world.

OMG you must, must stay at the HOTEL CETUS it's a four star hotel, in CETARA. The view is out of this world and it is built in a mountain. They are all very friendly and helpful. The service and the hotel is clean and they have a private beach. Each room is decorated slightly different with beautiful marble and southern Italian painted tiles. You can see Salerno across the bay out of your private balcony. The views are spectacular! Breakfast is included and they offer outside dining with a full bar. If you decide to go there tell the owner , La Signora Maria Catino, you got this info from "La sorrella di Mimi" , you might get even better treatment!

    Enjoy!

castelmare di stabia...also salerno is a lovely city which is not far

i live not far from la costiera amalfitana..Which resort on the Amalfi coast was your favourite and why?
As a base I鈥檇 take Ravello for the size of the town and quality of the concerts (Ravello Festival), although Positano also has a pleasant programme. The entire coast is worth visiting but Amalfi and Positano are tops for the folklore and the beach. Been there often both for business (Sociology Convention of Amalfi) and pleasure.

For those who have been both to the Amalfi Coast AND driven the Northern California Coast-can you tell me how?

they are different? What is the difference between the views along the California Coast (around Big Sur) and the Amalfi Coast? For those who have been both to the Amalfi Coast AND driven the Northern California Coast-can you tell me how?
Tthe biggest difference is that the amalfi coast has these great beautiful tiny villages on the cliffs, lots of them do not allow cars, and you walk down into them. They are stunning add add more character to the view. In Northern Cal, the ocean view and cliffs are pretty but the towns are older and less charming. There are development restrictions which is not a bad thing to restrict the problem is they are old and dont have any of the character and beauty the amalfi coast towns have. I live in Nor Cal and hoenymooned on the Amalfi Coast. Also on the Amalfi coast there are beautiful vineyards and lemon groves along the drive!
You can still tell you're in America when you're driving the Northern California Coast, and it's mostly just water and some houses on beams. But the Amalfi coast is amazing because when you see all the villages built into steep hills overlooking the gorgeous water it just makes you wonder HOW those villages were built and how the people who reside there live daily. For the Amalfi coast, it's even better to take a boat ride along the sea so you can see the marvelous villages from below ( I think there's a fairly cheap ferry ride you can take from place to place along the coast). I stayed in Positano and it was unlike anyplace I had ever been - it was simply amazing. I drove along the coast and looking down to the villages was absolutely amazing. Northern California is pretty, but it just doesn't compare, unless i missed a major part of the N. Cali coast. For those who have been both to the Amalfi Coast AND driven the Northern California Coast-can you tell me how?
Italy is clearly different than the Amalfi coast. Although many say California drivers are crazy, Italians take the cake. As with both, caution with driving is urged. In California, there are multilane highways, while in Italy, most often you will find 2 lane roads. As well, drivers will often honk when going around blind corners and then go ahead. Be aware that there is no cell phone use allowed when driving in Italy. The views are different-the rugged Pacific ocean compared to the calm Mediterranean. The flora and fauna are also different-lemon and citrus, compared to shrub pines. Both are beautiful.

Fly into Naples or Rome for vacation in Amalfi Coast?

We're planning to spend time on the Amalfi Coast. Tix are the same price. Should we fly into Naples, or into Rome and take the train to Naples? (Is it a pretty ride and worth the extra hassle?)Fly into Naples or Rome for vacation in Amalfi Coast?
Fly into Naples, unless you have time to tour around Rome. Don't miss Sorrento! Drink some limoncello and sit on a bench and watch people!
Naples airport is the closest airport (see Italy airports map for information http://www.theairdb.com/country/ITA.html). There are 3 airport buses a day to Sorrento and from Sorrento there are bus connections to Amalfi.

If you get to Rome (I assume Fiumicino), well, it is not difficult either.

First you need to get a train from Roma Termini, Rome's main train station, to Napoli Centrale, Naples' main train station. More info on this part of the journey on Trenitalia (http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD)

Then you'll take the private Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento on the Amalfi Peninsula http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en.Fly into Naples or Rome for vacation in Amalfi Coast?
You can fly to Rome and then fly from there to Naples. My sister and I preferred doing that than going on the train from Rome to Naples because it was less of a hassle and we did not have to worry about lugging our baggage up and down stairs.

If you can take a direct flight to Naples then I would suggest that. The Amalfi coast is breathtaking. You will love it. If you have the time, try to visit Capri, Anacapri, Positano, Ischia and Sorrento. Have a wonderful and safe trip.
Either will work.......Flying into Naples and taking in the Amalfi coast is a swell idea..........ya gotta see Capri while you're there......

but then does that mean you're NOT going to see ROME as well????

Can you do BOTH?????? Fly into Rome......give it at least a day or two........and THEN, head down to Naples..........not far by train....

shame to come all this way and NOT see Rome too, if ya have the chance. !
i would take a train from rome to naples because italian trains= so much fun! you meet all kinds of people and plus its cheaper.

even if i had to pay more for the train iwould take it because its soo much fun =)

  • Where to stay on the amalfi coast in italy?

want to go see the amalfi coast in italy but wheres the best place to go?what r the locals like?whats the nightlife like?Where to stay on the amalfi coast in italy?
In my experience - Sorrento and Positano, but hey, it's all good. Lucky you!

Locals are very friendly, food is great - no excellent. Nightlife depends on when you are going - summer is always more hectic. Although it should be noted that the most social gatherings happen in the restaurants.

Hotels I would recommend are the Desiree hotel in Sorrento or the Bristol Hotel - http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/conca鈥?/a> both with fantastic views, food and service.

    Enjoy.
Amalfi Coast is fantastic. Hiring a scooter is the best way to do it. We stayed in Sorrento but next time i go, I would stay in Positano. I am not a pastry lover but the cannollies in Postiano are the best!Where to stay on the amalfi coast in italy?
Sorrento is nice. I suggest Casa Astarita or Hotel Mignon. Both are owned by the same people, reasonably priced, and the rooms are bright and large...some with patios/balconies. I don't know much about the night life.
Go and see George Clooneys house!

Is Amalfi coast in Italy a rural area or is it a tourist location?

I'm looking to move to Italy for a year or so before college and was wondering if Amalfi is touristy and what other places would be good that are rural with cheap apartments and work opportunities.

10 points for best answer. thxIs Amalfi coast in Italy a rural area or is it a tourist location?
The Almalfi coast is one of the major tourist destinations here - very crowded during the peak tourist season. It's a spectacular coastal area which is relatively quiet in the off-season, but it isn't rural.

Cheap apartments don't really exist here. My one bedroom apartment in a small town in northern Italy costs me about the same as my four bedroom house in Colorado. Energy costs are relatively high.

Right now, there aren't a lot of work opportunities for anyone throughout Italy. You also need to know that your ability to find work will depend heavily on where you're coming from. If you're an EU citizen, you have the right to live and work within the EU. However, if you're not a citizen, you need a visa that allows work. A company basically has to show that the job requires special skills or experience that aren't readily available from an EU citizen in order to get a work permit for you. The work permit is required for the visa.
it's not a rural area, it's one of the most preferred place by tourists. It's near the sea, food is great and people are kind. But it's not so cheap. I think that maremma is cheaper than Amalfi coast. Besides it, maremma has many agriturismi that are rural hotels not expensive. And they usually have riding horse activities and excursions. It's near the coast where you can find easily a job because it's attended by tourists and English language is welcome especially if you work for ferries offices. Is Amalfi coast in Italy a rural area or is it a tourist location?
It's a turistic place, by the Tirrenean sea, in the south west coast of Italy.

    Is between Naples and Sorrento.

Work is something missing in general in Italy.

But if you still want to come, try in the region of Umbria, in central Italy.(Region capital city Perugia)

Or look at the inner part of the regions Tuscany and Marche, both central one on the east the other on the west coast

i live in salerno province.. work is very difficult to find.. i lived here for

in southern italy it works like this.. someone you know will recommend you to someone else for work.. you can't just turn up with a glowing CV and references and walk into a job.. oh no that's to 21st century...

even italians have to go through this torture

    good luck

salerno is a very pretty city near the amalfi
Hi I have been to Sorrento my ex bf from there. It is a tourist place. There are many villages surrounding Sorrento with great access. The Village I stayed in was called Nerano.
Its not Rural but more laid back relaxing resort. Its sort of like hidden secret for riches and educated tourists.
Amalfi is a tourist place! good luck!
